ALSO!! Before I was just throwing around the idea of going back to school just cos I was kinna bored and unsatisfyed with my art and the fact that I was becoming "complacent", but I think I really am going to go back to school now. cambryn and her friend Matt took me to Gemini School of Art and man, it is perfect. We did a little portfolio review with the owners and just talked with them for a couple hours and it was really inspiring, I feel like if I did do the course there, all the missing pieces would be filled in, and I could get a job anywhere. Anyway, dunno how I could pay for it but I'm just excited, I hope I can figure out a way to get in.

Partly for a roleplaying game and partly just for fun, Sargon and I are trying to come up with ideas for magical sex toys. This is surprisingly difficult, especially in a technological setting where so much is already possible. Sex toys as they exist today are pretty hard to improve upon.
Take, for example, anal beads. How the hell do you improve on anal beads? They do what they do, and they pretty much do it perfectly. They're fucking awesome. Yet there must be a way to make them even better with magic. If you wanted to get fancy, fine, they vibrate, but you could do that with technology. We're reaching for something more. A sexy curse, a naughty enchantment . . . the only limit is the perverted imagination.
So I open it up to youall. Anal beads, cockrings, butt plugs, pony tails, probes, dildos, harnesses, crops, collars, gags, ben-wa balls, gloves, paddles, ropes, corsets, the whole nine yards. Anything that could conceivably be associated with sex, especially kinky sex. Ideas? Thoughts? Inspirations? Feel free to get as bizarre and perverse as you like. I am sure my character will thank you extensively once he recovers. He's the kind of guy who would write thank-you notes, you know? He needs an ass-beating.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is not nearly as bad as I was expecting. In fact, it is so retarded it approaches a kind of awesome. Sure, it's like a barrage of cliches from other movies strung together by an extremely thin plot: Airdrop Ninja! Big Gun Battle! Car Chase with Armor Suits! Training Montage! Underwater Death Star Assault! Shirtless Ninja Fight! But all the excesses actually add up to something more than just a big pile of crap, and unlike some other movies of this type. (*cough cough* Transformers 2 *cough cough*) This one doesn't seem to drag on for too long. Ray Park looks like a walking condom ad in his full-latex bodysuit thing (with lips, why does he have lips?) But the guy playing Stormshadow has real charisma - he's like a badass incarnation of Sulu as played by Jet Li. It was a lot of fun seeing all the little bit parts - watch for Brendan Fraser or you might miss him. Overall, it's a braindead summer action-fest that doesn't waste time trying to pretend it's something else.
Finally saw Crimson Tide, and while I didn't expect much, this was a really tense film that didn't play Straw Man like I expected. I was expecting them to lean harder on the idea that Denzel was the Good Guy, and Gene Hackman was the Bad Stupid Military Guy, but it actually built the uncertainty of the situation up very well. You didn't actually know who was right and who was wrong until the very last minute, and you could see strengths and weaknesses on both sides. I kept going back and forth on who I agreed with, and I found it really involving. Part action movie, but with a very strong character element brought out by two great lead actors and a really strong supporting cast. If you like Hunt For Red October, then you should absolutely see it.
I must have seen John Carpenter's The Thing like a hundred times, maybe literally, but until i saw the Blu-Ray I feel like I never actually saw it at all. Some Blu-Ray discs are done on the cheap: they don't have the original film stock, or they don't want to pay for a full remaster, so they just do a digital cleanup on the DVD transfer and call it Blu-Ray. That really pisses me off, that whenever I get a BD of an older movie, I have to look at the fucking box and see if it actually says "1080p Presentation", because if it doesn't, I ain't buying it. Check the fucking label, folks. But somebody put some money into remastering The Thing, because it looks fucking Amazing. I would never have described this movie as "beautifully shot", but I will now, after having seen the crystal-clear arctic landscapes on this disc. If you love this movie, then this is a must-have disc if you have a Blu-Ray player, as it is one of the best-looking movies I have yet seen on the format. It was like watching a whole new movie. It's that good.

As a bunch of you saw on me post a few days ago, my friend Paul was in a pretty brutal assault this past weekend. Although Paul is one of the least confrontational people I've ever met (he wouldn't hurt a fly), one of his acquaintances instigated a confrontation, and Paul got caught in the middle of it. This guy (who still hasn't been caught) punched Paul in the face while holding a blade. It took 150 stitches to put Paul's face back together, but that's only the start of his problems.
The story made the local news, HERE.
He's recovering well, but despite working almost-full-time, he doesn't have health insurance. He doesn't know I'm doing this, but I'm taking donations to help him cover the hospital bills. It's not just the ER visit - he needed a facial surgeon for this. The hospital will work with him to an extent, but it's going to be hellishly expensive, and I know his budget is tight already.
Just to give you a bit of information... as most of you know, this is a fandom LJ. Paul is one of us. He's a geek, a fellow fandomer, and a die-hard sci-fi fan, especially Star Trek. He's the buddy I hang out with all the time to watch TOS episodes and geek out over fanfic. He doesn't have internet right now (I told you, his budget is TIGHT), so I print out fanfic for him. But yeah, he's one of our own, and he needs a bit of help.
I've set up a PayPal account. I'd like to thank everyone who has already donated. We're up to $145. THANK YOU. I'm going to transfer the money to a bank account and give Paul a check on Monday. I'll post here on my LJ with the total amount we collect.
The e-mail for the PayPal account is faisons(at)gmail(dot)com. If you can help out with as little as $5, it adds up. It's a shame we live in a country where honest, hard-working folks can get injured through no fault of their own, and STILL end up OWING money as a result! But I guess that's why we have to look out for each other.
Again, thanks to all who donated, and thank you to anyone who decides to donate.
EDITED TO ADD: I was trying to figure out how much I should throw in the pot. I've decided that I'll match the top donation plus $10. At the moment, the top donation is $50 (I won't name names, but hun, that was amazing of you - THANK YOU), so I'm putting in $60. You guys are all amazing, and it's people like the fandom folks I know who give me faith in humanity again. ♥

| Alcibiades' Namesake |
[11 Nov 2009|08:53pm] |
We were talking earlier about the Ancient Greek General Alcibiades whom our beloved general is named after, and if anyone is interested, here's a bust of him:
http://www.livius.org/a/1/greeks/alcibiades_cm.JPG
His name is right underneath, ALKIBIADES KLINIOU ATHENAIOS (The Athenian Alcibiades, son of Cleinias). Wonder if there's any physical resemblance...?

Here's the idea: I'd like to have at least one meetup before Thanksgiving. I want it to be relaxed, low-key, simple, and fun. I want to make sure that as many people as possible can attend, and that the venue will be conducive to everyone. We've got folks in Lawrence, folks in Kansas City, and even someone out in Topeka. I think I'd like to do this meetup in Kansas City, and the next one in Lawrence.
Here's the plan: Either this Saturday (the 14th) OR next Saturday (the 21st), we'll get together for food, drinks, movie/episode watching, and general geekery.
We'd start at McCoy's in Westport around 2:00 PM. Food, drinks, breaking the ice, general silliness. For anyone who hasn't been there, McCoy's is a restaurant and brewery. They have a fantastic selection of their own beers, and their food is just damned good. You DO NOT have to be 21+ to go in - it's a restaurant, not a bar. Even though it's a Saturday, 2:00 PM shouldn't be too crowded, and we'll probably be able to geek out to our hearts' content without distracting the mundane folks.
After food and beer and socializing, I personally invite everyone to join me at my house, which is less than two miles from McCoy's, and within very easy access of I-35 and other major roads. (I'm near KU Med.) The party continues until folks get tired and need to leave.
More details HERE.

"Cut the Chord" by Charlotte Martin |

So in my philosophy class, we are reading Foucault, and in this reading he references a Greek general named, get this, Alcibiades. Apparently this particular general had a certain proclivity for younger men. I find that highly amusing.
Also, did we ever settle the issue on correct pronunciation of dear Al's name? I made my professor state it very clearly just in case.

Okay well um I come bringing something entirely different. I know some people can't just read a good book and not want to play the characters for themselves sooo I bring to you have_dressing it's basically a dressing room style RP which is very laid back meaning there's no plot or there's as much of a plot as you want to make! Basically dressing rooms are where multiples of characters can partake in whatever you want them to! If you ever just wanted to play someone from the book or even try out a muse for a future endeavor here's your place. And what the hell most books nowadays get dressing rooms anyway and this one deserves one too, damn it! If you're not into RPing feel free to ignore this. /slinks back into the darkened recess of confusing hallways

| Face wash recommendation for those with sensitive skin. |
[09 Nov 2009|05:12pm] |
I had been using Aveda's acne face wash, for about 9 months. It worked great but didn't want to dish out the money for the refills every month. Whole Foods sells a brand called Collective Wellbeing ($12), and I decided to check out the Oatmeal & Raspberry cleansing paste a week ago. This is the best face wash I've ever used. It smells nice, cleanses really well, and doesn't have acne medicine in it. I have eczema so I've always been a fan of oats in the bath & the occasional face mask. For my budget, I'm super happy with it. So far it's keeping my skin clean, clear, and more moisturized. I still use a small amount of EveryDay Shea lotion on the super dry areas of my face, but overall it does not dry out my skin.

I know people love to fuck with nicknames. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But I need to know, my dear fandom, what is this strange aversion you people have to using the full name "Leonard"?
Listen, in all of TOS, the old movies, the new movie, the novels, and even the animated series, there has only been ONE NICKNAME for Doctor Leonard H. McCoy, and that's "Bones." And the only person who calls him that is Jim Kirk. Nowhere in canon have I ever seen McCoy called Leo, Len, or Lenny. Maybe if you're going into his past and showing him as a little kid, I could deal with it. If you're telling an anotherwise fucking amazing story, I can deal with "Leo," but NEVER "Len" or "Lenny." NOT HAPPENING.
His name is Leonard. And yes, he may be a fictional character, but he's my favorite, I'm protective of him, and I'm not apologizing.
